Research Project
Maroon Communities in Recôncavo da Bahia
Research Description
My research project aims at reviewing experiences of emancipation by focusing on active struggles led by maroon communities to guarantee their access to the land or to ensure their collective title of the territory they occupy. Maroon communities were created by enslaved people during the transatlantic slave trade in the modern era to confront chattel slavery and maintain spaces of autonomy and liberation, inside, nearby or away from the colonial cartographies by forging ties of solidarity with other actors of the worlds of slavery. Their struggle is historical and contemporary. In our presentation, we are going to give you an overview of major challenges faced by Maroon Communities in Brazil and other countries.
