“Embedded cultural diplomacy in the age of interactive new media: companies as non-state actors, and local employees as cultural diplomats”
This work focuses on those graduates of the Chinese language and literature program in Egyptian universities who work(ed) for Chinese companies. Adopting subjectification (in the Foucauldian sense) as the analytical framework, it takes a foreign language literacy-centric approach to explore how their linguistic capability of speaking Mandarin plays out as a transformational process in the shaping of Egyptian local perceptions of China in the age of interactive new media. A selection of short videos produced by Chinese companies constitutes the main primary sources for this research topic.
