This webinar will focus on national/international structural constraints in Tunisia, contrary to typical Western-heavy narratives of the failures of the liberal democratic. The webinar will provide a comprehensive analysis and summary of “how we got here,” and the speakers will debate and interrogate dominant narratives and rhetorical binaries and discuss the importance of decolonizing knowledge, providing critical alternatives, and discussing how we can envision and build an alternative and more equitable future in Tunisia.

Tarek Kahlaoui 

  • Obtained his Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 and was a tenure-track assistant professor at Rutgers University (2008-2017). He has also served as the general director of the Tunisian Institute of Strategic Studies (2012-2014). Currently, Tarek is an Associate Professor of History at MSB - South Mediterranean University 

Shreya Parikh

  • Dual Ph.D. candidate in political sociology at CERI-Sciences Po Paris and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Beyond Borders Ph.D. Fellow (2022-24) at Zeit-Stiftung. She is also an affiliated researcher at the Institut de Recherche sur le Maghreb Contemporain (IRMC) in Tunis. Her dissertation research focuses on the constructions and contestations of race and racialization in Tunisia through a focus on the study of racialization of Black Tunisians and Sub-Saharan migrants. Shreya is interested in the study of race, borders, migration, and citizenship in North Africa and the diaspora.

Ayoub Menzli 

  • A former Nonresident Fellow at TIMEP focusing on political economy in Tunisia. He is an independent consultant, analyst, and researcher from Tunisia. He holds a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Carthage and an MA in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe. Ayoub is currently pursuing a PhD in Political Science at Roma Tre University. His research involves North African politics, international financial institutions, and Euro-Mediterranean relations. His research interests also include energy and climate transition.
