‘The Last Earth’: On Reclaiming the Palestinian Narrative and Recreating the Self
May 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Dr. Ramzy Baroud will talk about his latest book, The Last Earth, a narrative nonfiction story of modern Palestinian history. The book comprises the stories of complex characters whose accounts overlap in terms of the collective experience. It tells the story of modern Palestine through the memories of those who have lived it. Ordinary Palestinians have rarely narrated their own history. Dr. Baroud drew on dozens of interviews to produce vivid and intimate accounts of Palestinian lives - in in villages, refugee camps, prisons and cities, in the lands of their ancestors and in exile. Against dominant narratives, The Last Earth is one attempt at reclaiming Palestine's past - and present - for all its people.
Dr. Ramzy Baroud is a US-Palestinian journalist, media consultant, an author, internationally-syndicated columnist and Editor of The Palestine Chronicle. He is a former Managing Editor of London-based Middle East Eye and former Deputy Managing Editor of Al Jazeera online. Baroud taught mass communication at Australia’s Curtin University of Technology, Malaysia Campus. He is the author of four books and a contributor to many others. His books include “The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story”, “My Father Was a Freedom Fighter: Gaza’s Untold Story” and “The Second Palestinian Intifada: A Chronicle of a People’s Struggle”. His books were translated to several languages including French, Turkish, Arabic, Korean, Malayalam, among others. Baroud has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Palestine Studies from the European Centre for Palestinian Studies at the University of Exeter (2015) and was a Non-Resident Scholar at Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies, University of California Santa Barbara (2016-17).
