Speaker bio:

Gabriella Hecht is a Professor in the History Department at the University of Michigan, where she also directs the Program in Science, Technology, and Society and serves as associate director of the African Studies Center. She hold a PhD in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania (1992), and a bachelor’s degree in Physics from MIT (1986). Before arriving at UM in 1999, she taught at Stanford University. She has been a visiting scholar in universities in Australia, France, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, and Sweden.

Much of her research focuses on nuclear topics. She has written books about uranium from Africa (specifically, Gabon, Madagascar, Namibia, Niger, and South Africa) and nuclear power in France.  Now she is expanding her scope, having begun a book on technology and power in Africa and also contemplating a project on transnational toxic trash. Themes that traverse these topics include contemporary technopolitics, occupational and environmental health, labor, ontological politics, and nationalism, colonialism, and post-coloniality.
